What is DNS? It serves to resolve a hostname to an IP address. It is like a directory, so visitors know where your website is hosted and how to deliver an email to you. The common records are A, MX, CNAME, and TXT.
DNS must be defined for a domain name in order to work. There are free and paid DNS, any differences? In general, they serve the same purposes but there are different types.
DNS is the core of your website and email delivery. Without it, your website will stop and your email cannot be delivered even your web hosting is running. Many do not know what is DNS and neglected on how it is important.
Basically, you will need at least 2 for a domain. A good practice is they are from the different networks. So, in the event, should one has failed the other DNS continues to resolve the domain name to where you are hosting your services.
This is known as round-robin. There is another type of DNS. We called it the anycast DNS. So, what is anycast? Anycast DNS is a traffic routing algorithm used for the speedy delivery of website content that advertises individual IP addresses on multiple nodes.
User requests are directed to specific nodes based on such factors as the capacity and health of the server, as well as the distance between it and the website visitors. There are a few advantages using anycast DNS, I will list them;
- Faster connections – Routing users through the nearest intermediary node minimizes round-trip time (RTT), thereby decreasing the number of hops and reducing latency.
- Simplified server configuration – Anycast lets a single server configuration be distributed to all of your network nodes.
- High availability – Advertising an IP address on multiple nodes creates redundancy, thereby providing backup in the event a node becomes overloaded or fails.
- DDoS mitigation – Anycast provides intrinsic DDoS mitigation by offering failover alternatives if a node is attacked or goes down.
Now, we know what is DNS and its importance. Not all are the same. When you register a domain with us successfully, we provide anycast DNS from ClouDNS. You can manage your domain zone records at any times from the control panel
